Business Startup - April 2008

justin_dean.jpg Sunday, 27 April 08 - 03:57 PM (GMT)
By Justin Dean in Events

This weekend saw London's Business Start-up Event at the Excel Centre. Terapad were there, and although we had a fantastic time it's fair to say we were completely overwhelmed by the positive response

Our stand was small, but was permanently crowded. Our team had to work non-stop, sacrificing all their breaks in order to speak to all those that were interested in Terapad. Unfortunately, even with our best intentions, I feel we didn't get round to speaking to everyone and for that I can only apologise. Hopefully next time we will go with twice the staff and a much larger stand!

From Raiki Healers, and Life Coaches to Online Shoe Shop Owners and  Travel Agents we met literally hundreds of individuals with great business ideas. Terapad was a perfect solution for so many of these entrepreneurs and over 700 people signed up for a free website whilst at the event. Terapad sign up rates have been over double the average so we can only assume that many more have been signing up after leaving the event.

Free Websites

William Millott from Terapad helps budding entrepreneurs set up a free website.

It was a great opportunity for us to listen to our clients and get a better understanding for what they are looking for in Terapad. We are taking all that feedback on board and I believe it will benefit all Terapad users, not just those attending the show.

Robert Saleh, Sales Manager for Terapad reseller HTLonline , accompanied Terapad to the event. He was on hand to help those interested in services beyond the scope of Terapad. HTLonline took orders for creating custom Templates, providing domain names, and even maintaining computer networks. Robert commented “It was really good of Terapad to invite us along to Business Startup. Their commitment to us as a reseller is really first class, and our relationship is becoming hugely beneficial to both companies. For HTLonline this means increased sales in an area of the market we previously struggled to reach".

It’s good to hear our resellers benefit as much as we do, and if any of our other resellers would like us to attend an event with them, please contact your channel manager.

So our thanks goes out to all those who we met at the show, and especially all those who signed up All of us at Terapad wish you the very best of luck with your start-up businesses and your free Terapad websites.

Terapad to attend Business Startup Event

blogpic.jpg Friday, 22 February 08 - 03:11 PM (GMT)
By Joshua Davidson in Events
I'm very excited to report that Terapad will be exhibiting at the famous 'Business Startup Event' that is being held in the ExCeL Centre, London on the 25th and 26th April 2008.

The event is the UK's biggest and most interactive small business exhibition and we will be there to demonstrate Terapad to over 30,000 small business owners. The fact that Terapad websites are free is going to cause quite a stir!

A business starting out today needs exposure and
free services to survive and this event is designed to assist small businesses in every way possible.

However there will be few exhibitors that will offer as much in this regard as Terapad. By simply visiting
us in Stand 88 or our website at http://www.terapad.com attendees will be able to sign up for a free website with a shop, news feed, forum, image gallery, events calendar and more.

The Terapad team are also looking forward to meeting with the many entrepreneurs that will be attending the event.  Terapad currently partners with companies from all over the world and we will therefore be interested to speak to anyone that thinks their organisation could benefit from offering cheap but effective websites to their current clients.

Websites are an increasingly important part of all businesses and societies. In fact already this year Terapad has assisted sports clubs, brass bands, charities and many other types of organisations from across the world. Terapad is unique in providing businesses with their own search engine optimized website, which also connect to a community of existing Terapad users and therefore ensures high levels of interest.

If you would like a free ticket to attend the event simply visit http://www.bstartup.com.

We look forward to meeting you there.

Adobe Business Exchange

stephan_tual.jpg Thursday, 01 November 07 - 10:32 AM (GMT)
By Stephan Tual in Events
Yesterday I spoke about Customer Engagement at the Adobe Business Exchange event. Adobe was kind enough to host my slides on their site, although without the commentary they might seem a bit surreal at first glance

The event itself was great, and we had some very inspirational speakers present, in particular David Keene, VP Technology EMEA at SAP, who did a fantastic job at highlighting how the accelerating rate of technology adoption in the home is affecting the enterprise in surprising ways. For example, how a lot of people today have better means of productivity at home rather than work - it was hard not to think about Terapad at that moment!

He also mentioned how his 8 years old son rather use the Internet than watch television. Having an 11 year old daughter myself I could definitely relate. When this new generation gets a job (a job which hasn't been invented yet), do you think they will have any difficulty jumping straight in the web interfaces in use in their workplace? Of course not. In fact, they will probably seek solutions for their enterprise similar to the tools they grew up with.

If these kids want to place a video online, they do not need to reach out to a video production agency to convert the video. They do not need to open a video editing package either, no matter 'user friendly' these might have become. They just head for YouTube.

So when this generation will want to have a website created, do you think they will:

  • Instinctively go and ring a Web Design agency, go through 3 weeks of exchanging technical specs, then pay 20K for an average website?
  • Do you think they will feel the urge of learn HTML and server-side programming themselves? Or pay to send a few interns to go on a training course?
  • ... or even purchase an 'easy to deploy' CMS package? (as if such thing existed... )

Of course not. They'll be thinking 'What's the YouTube for that?'.

We'll be there for them.

Wiki Wednesdays: 2.0 events done right.

stephan_tual.jpg Thursday, 05 April 07 - 08:21 AM (GMT)
By Stephan Tual in Events

Hi, Stephan here, I'll be participating from time to time on the official Terapad blog.

"Wiki Wednesdays" are a series of events running in 10 cities around the world, focused, as the title implies, on Wiki technologies. The concept was started by Wiki platform SocialText, however they now let the community run the events.

I attended the London one yesterday night, my first time at a Wiki Wednesday, and didn't really know what to expect. My experience has been that events - even remotely-  connected to companies directly involved in the industry tend to be rather limiting in terms of what can or cannot be said without risking offending the organizers.

Nothing could have been further from the truth at this event organized and moderated by David Terrar, from Business Two Zero. In fact, they seemed to get everything right, and I hope other London events will take a page from their book, as the evening of presentations just flew by and it was time to go home before I knew it.

Everyone had a chance to speak

So what makes it so different?

The format, where everyone who signed up as a speaker is given a chance to speak for 5 minutes, followed by 5 minutes of lively discussion with the audience. Presenters go in the order they registered, and timing is strictly enforced (I wish it was true about all events!), meaning:

  • A true democratic forum where everyone who signed up (it's free) can speak, not just the so called industry 'digerati'.
  • Timings keep everyone honest: once your 5 minutes are up, you're out, there's no favoritism
  • The audience never has to sit through endless corporate powerpoint slides, as the next speaker is already on stage as soon as the previous one is finished.
  • Because of the high number of speakers, you get to see a lot of cool technologies with a couple of hours
  • There's a real interaction with the audience as there's as much time dedicated to presentation that there is for Q&A

There was also *gasp* food. Now that doesn't sound like much but it makes a huge difference IMHO. People attending the event are going to stay until 9PM, and usually finish work right before the event itself. Providing food to your audience isn't just a nice touch - it shows you actually care about the comfort of your guests. Also, drinks were made available before the event proper actually started - another nice touch. The organizers were eager to listen to feedback. Actually David Terrar asked for feedback *before* AND *after* the event. "What can we do better next time?", "Do you want to experiment with another format?". The audience was engaged from beginning to end - absolutely top class.

You couldn't get more central in terms of location

The location was not half bad either, as Microsoft provided a very interestingly designed room called the 'Swimming Pool' - complete with a good quality projector, laptop, audio output, and even diving board (it's called the Swimming Pool for a reason). Microsoft also provided the food, beer and wine. Kudos to them!

You can read a summary of what was presented that night here and here.
Overall, it was an excellent event, and I'll definitely try to attend the next one.
